  • Cognitive Behavioral Counseling: This is where you spend time identifying the cause of your substance abuse, repair broken relationships and discover how to use healthier coping methods.
  • Medication Management: This is when you possibly use medications to manage the withdrawal symptoms and treat any co-occurring psychiatric problems like anxiety or depression.
  • Long-Term Care & Follow-Ups: Staying in a regular program for an extended period helps prevent relapses and allows you to maintain your sobriety. This can involve going to regular online and in-person meetings to keep yourself on track.

What to Think about When Considering Treatment

When considering treatment, it is essential to recognize that it is not one size fits all. Everyone has different needs.

It doesn’t matter if you have a problem with alcohol or prescription or illegal drugs, addiction treatment needs to be tailored to fit your situation. It is crucial that you find a program that is right for you.

  • Partial Hospitalization: Partial hospitalization or day treatment is for individuals who need continuous medical monitoring, but still want to live at home. These types of programs usually meet at the treatment center for 8 hours. It is a lot like going to school, except you are helping yourself heal.
  • Outpatient Treatment Programs: Outpatient programs are not a live-in treatment plan. These outpatient programs are scheduled around your things like school or work. Usually, you spend time receiving treatment for a few hours during the day but do not stay overnight. The primary focus of an outpatient treatment program is relapse prevention.
  • Sober Living: Sober living communities means you live there and follow an intensive treatment program similar to a residential program.

The idea behind sober living is that you live with other people in recovery in a supportive, drug-free, and safe environment. Sober living facilities are excellent if you do not have somewhere to go or are worried that going home may result in a relapse.

When getting help for an addiction problem, it is essential to be treated for any other psychological or medical issues you may be experiencing.

To make a full recovery, you will need an integrated treatment program. An integrated treatment program means that you will be getting addiction and mental health treatment from the same provider or team.

Get Support for your Addiction

When in recovery from an addiction problem, you do not want to do it alone. It is best that you reach out for support.

It doesn’t matter what treatment you approach from inpatient hospitalizations to sober living, having a positive influence and stable support system is crucial to your success.

Perhaps you started using to numb a painful feeling or emotion, to calm yourself down, to unwind and relax after a bad day, or to forget about all your problems.

No matter what your reasoning when you started using, once you are sober again, those negative feelings will resurface.

To have a long-lasting recovery, you will need to resolve any underlying issues you may have that led to your drug abuse in the first place.

Upon resolving your underlying issues, you will begin to experience a wide variety of emotions from the negative like stress, anger, and loneliness, to the positive emotions like happiness, excitement, interest, hope, and so forth.

These are all normal emotions that are a part of everyday life. Finding healthy methods to cope with negative emotions as they arise is a critical part of your recovery and treatment. Here are some methods you can use to deal with your negative emotions as they arise:

  1. Get Moving: Taking a fast-paced walk for 10-20 minutes can be sufficient to relieve stress. Meditation and yoga are great stress busters. Plus, yoga allows you to connect your mind, body, and soul in a peaceful environment. It is also a great way to find balance in your life as well.
  2. Enjoy The Outdoors: Go outside and take a moment to enjoy the fresh air and warm sun. Notice the beauty in nature and consider it in detail.
  3. Play with your Pets: Animals are a lot of fun, and a great way to unwind is by petting your critter’s fur and spending time with them.
  4. Use your Sense of Smell: Take time to smell the roses and slow down your busy life. Whether you pause to get a whiff of coffee beans, flowers, or some essential oils using your sense of smell is a great way to unwind from a stressful day.
  5. Visualization: Close your eyes and think of your favorite place or a favorite memory.
  6. Stretch: Take time to stretch and relax
  7. Pamper Yourself: Get a massage or do something for yourself that is relaxing but fun. Perhaps even take a warm bubble bath.

Tips for Coping with Drug Cravings

Getting sober is only the beginning of your recovery. Your brain needs time to develop new connections. During this time your drug cravings may be intense. Here are some ways you can avoid falling victim to a relapse:

  • Stay Away from Using Buddies: Do not engage with anyone who is still drinking or using drugs. You will want to find friends that will support you versus tempting you back into the addiction lifestyle.
  • Avoid Clubs and Bars: Even if you do not have an alcohol problem, drinking impairs judgment, which can lead to relapse if you are not careful. For this reason, it is best not to drink.
  • Be Honest With Healthcare Providers: If you need any medical procedure, be upfront and use a doctor who will work with you to prescribe alternative medications or the minimum medication needed.
  • Be Cautious with Prescription Drugs: If you were addicted to something like an opioid painkiller you might need to talk to your provider about managing your pain with alternative methods.

Regardless of which substance you had problems with it is best to stay away from any narcotic medications or other drugs that have a potential for abuse including anti-anxiety drugs and painkillers.

  • Distract Yourself: If you are experiencing intense cravings, it might be best to get involved in an activity to keep your mind off the cravings. Immerse yourself in a hobby, read, surf the web, listen to music, call a friend, or see a movie. Once you are engaged in doing something else, you will find your cravings will go away much quicker.
  • Talk About It: Address your cravings by talking to your family members or friends when a craving occurs. Talking can be helpful when it comes to figuring out the reason for your cravings. Also, people find that talking about it helps them relieve the urge to use. Craving is nothing to feel sorry for; it is merely something to work though.

The trick to overcoming an addiction is never to give up, even if you have failed before. The road to recovery is not linear. It comes with many ups and downs. You may relapse, and it is necessary to recognize that what defines your recovery is not the relapse, but how you carry yourself afterward.
